ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO (Wire Update) — One of cable news most popular television series is about to get the CSI treatment with a new spinoff! According to the cable network Starz, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” will begin development on a prequel series.

The series will center around the character of “Spartacus” star Lucy Lawless and include cameo appearances by several of the show’s other cast members. The New York Post reports the new series will begin development during the summer months in New Zealand and will air in early 2011.

Lucy Lawless has had a successful career as an actress. She was the lead role of “Xena: Warrior Princess” and was a reoccurring cast member of the popular scifi series “Battlestar Galactica.” In 2009, Lawless was cast in “Spartacus” as Lucretia the ‘sexual voracious’ and wife of Batiatus.

One of the actors set to make a cameo in the prequel series is Andy Whitfield, who plays the title character of “Spartacus.” Filming for the second season of Spartacus was paused after Whitfield announced he was being treated for non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
