MATAM, SENEGAL (BNO NEWS) — A building collapse in northeast Senegal on Saturday killed eleven people during a World Cup viewing party, officials said on Sunday.

The accident happened at building in the city of Matam, which is about 667 kilometers (414 miles) north of the capital Dakar. A group of people had gathered at a terrace to watch the World Cup match between Uruguay and South Korea, which ended in 2 – 1.

Shortly after the game ended, and when many of those on the terrace began to leave, the collapse happened. “The official toll is 11 dead and two wounded,” a local fire official told a local radio station. “We have stopped the search because there are no more victims under the rubble.”

Officials have started an investigation but believe poor construction is to blame for the tragedy.
