John Lennon’s killer denied parole for the sixth time

NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) – Mark David Chapman, the killer of musician John Lennon, was denied parole for the sixth time by the New York state’s Parole Board Commission, the New York Post reported on Tuesday.

Chapman, 55, will be eligible for parole in two years. He has appeared before the parole board for six times being unsuccessful in each occasion.

In December 8, 1980, Chapman shot the former Beatle outside his apartment in Manhattan after Lennon returned from a late-night recording session. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. So far, he has served 29 years at the Attica Correctional Facility.

Chapman’s parole was denied for his disregard displayed for the norms of society and the sanctity of human life. He was also denied parole in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. In the other occasions, the parole board denied his request due to concern for the public safety and welfare.

Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lennon, has repeatedly expressed her desire of keeping Chapman behind bars. The Japanese-born artist said that she fears for her and her son’s safety as well as for Chapman’s as Ono claims that there are many people who want to see him dead.

Chapman has shown a remarkable behavior under custody. He has not had an infraction since 1994 and thus he was allowed to conjugal visits with his wife, Gloria, for the past 20 years. Prison officials said that he spends the day working on housekeeping and in the library.
