Mexico extradites alleged murderer to the US
MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) – Mexican authorities on Thursday announced the extradition of a Mexican national to the United States who is wanted in Alameda, California for the murder of a man in 2008, officials said.
Raul Cabezas Gutierrez was handed over to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents in a federal hangar at the Mexico City International Airport. The extradition was requested by the U.S. government and approved by Mexico's Foreign Ministry.
Cabezas is wanted in Alameda, California to face murder and assault charges. In January 2008, Cabezas allegedly stabbed two men with a knife during the New Year's celebrations. Both men were transported to a local hospital.
One of the victims sustained severe injuries and died from his wounds at the medical facility. The other man stabbed by Cabezas recovered after a while.
The defendant was located and arrested last March 10 in Tlalnepantla, a municipality in Mexico State. He had previously escaped from a prison in Mexico City. That same date, his extradition order was signed and approved by a local judge.
So far, the current administration, led by President Felipe Calderon, has extradited 368 individuals. Form this amount, 346 criminals have been extradited to the United States.
