More than 200 people given speed citations during ‘Operation Safety Net’ in Ohio

COLUMBUS (BNO NEWS) -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol handed out more than 200 speed citations during the first phase of "Operation Safety Net" on Wednesday, the patrol announced on Friday.

"Operation Safety Net" is a concentrated traffic enforcement and criminal patrol operation in Ohio in which the New York State Police, the Pennsylvania State Police, the West Virginia State Police, and the U.S. Border Patrol also participate in.

The effort, which will aim to reduce fatal and injury crashes, will continue throughout the summer during three additional phases. It focuses on the eastern part of Ohio and targets impaired and aggressive driving, as well as speed and other high-risk behaviors, crash causing violations and commercial vehicle enforcement. Surrounding states and Border Patrol will focus on connecting interstates during the operation.

During phase one in Ohio on Wednesday, the Ohio State Patrol gave out 238 speed citations to drivers. It also made eight drug arrests/seizures, 47 commercial vehicle citations, 20 commercial vehicles placed out-of-service, 67 seat belt citations, and two OVI (Operating a Vehicle while Impaired) arrests.
