New York Governor Paterson accepts resignation of Secretary of State Cortés-Vazquez
ALBANY, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – New York Governor David Paterson announced on Thursday that he accepted the resignation of the Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, effective on August 31.
“Secretary Cortés-Vázquez has been with my Administration from the beginning, leading the Department of State with skill and distinction. As Secretary of State, Lorraine has been able to take the important roles of the Department of State,” Paterson said.
Cortés-Vázquez decided to resign to her current position in order to take a position as Executive Vice President of AARP, the organization based in Washington D.C. dedicated to advocate for elder Americans.
“She has balanced the often competing interests of economic development and environmental protection with thoughtfulness and dexterity. AARP will be lucky to have her, and we look forward to her work on behalf of older persons in New York and throughout the country,” the New York Governor added.
Under the leadership of Cortés-Vázquez, the department invested nearly $130 million in 622 projects across New York. Some of the projects included safety initiatives, improving business climate, regulation of industries, job creation and efforts to eradicate poverty.
“I would like to thank Governor Paterson for the opportunity to serve the people of New York. I am proud of the work we’ve done together in bringing about fiscal responsibility, creating healthier communities, supporting sustainable development and promoting diversity in all aspects of State government,” Cortés-Vázquez said.
