No damage reported after moderate earthquake jolts Afghanistan, Pakistan

KABUL (BNO NEWS) — A strong but deep earthquake struck the Hindu Kush Region in northern Afghanistan on late Friday evening, seismologists said, but no damage or casualties were reported. Shaking was also felt in parts of Pakistan and other neighboring countries.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake at 11.51 p.m. local time (1921 GMT) was centered approximately 75 kilometers (45 miles) south-southeast of Fayzabad, a district in Badakhshan Province of northern Afghanistan. It struck about 199 kilometers (124 miles) deep, making it a deep earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Minor to moderate earthquake shaking was felt all across the region, including parts of Tajikistan, northern Pakistan and northern India. No damage was expected nor reported, however, due to the depth of the earthquake.

Officials with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said none of its personnel was injured as a result of the earthquake. No damage was reported to ISAF facilities, either.

The USGS estimated that approximately 5 million people may have perceived light earthquake shaking as a result of the earthquake, while 24 million more may have felt weak shaking. It said no damage would be expected based on the earthquake data.

On May 30, 1998, a strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck about 102 kilometers (63 miles) northwest of Friday’s earthquake, killing more than 4,000 people and injuring more than 10,000 others. That earthquake struck only several dozen kilometers (miles) deep.

And on October 8, 2005, a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Kashmir, Pakistan – approximately 336 kilometers (208 miles) southeast of Friday’s earthquake – and killed at least 87,351 people. More than 71,000 people were injured.
