Oakland Park, FL man arrested for brutally raping elderly woman in 2005

BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) – An Oakland Park, Florida man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping an elderly woman in 2005 after fingerprint evidence connected him to the crime, the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) announced.

Shane Michael Shaw, 24, was arrested on two counts of armed sexual battery and one count of armed kidnapping. Shaw was stopped on drug possession charges and when his fingerprints were taken they matched to the 2005 crime.

BSO detectives said that on March 14, 2005, at 2:10 a.m. local time, Shaw broke into an apartment at the Lighthouse Cove Time Share Community in North Ocean Boulevard in Pompano Beach. A 70-year-old woman of Minnesota lived in the apartment. Once inside, Shaw knocked the elder woman and grabbed her around her neck. She screamed and the suspect tied her hands behind her back, gagged her and took a knife from the kitchen. After having subdued the victim, Shaw raped her.

The suspect also stole about $150 in cash and left the apartment through the back sliding glass door about an hour after the attack started. BSO detectives arrived at the scene and collected finger prints and evidence.

The physical evidence as processed at the BSO’s Crime Lab while the fingerprints were entered into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), a national database. At that time, Shaw did not have any criminal record so his finger prints did not appear in the AFIS.

Over five years later, on August 4, Shaw was arrested in Oakland Park for possessing cocaine and drug paraphernalia. He was booked and fingerprinted at BSO’s jail. His prints matched the ones from the 2005 rape and a senior latent print analyst confirmed the match.

Shaw eventually admitted being the perpetrator of the raping of the 70-year-old woman. An arrest warrant was issued regarding this case and more charges are pending.
