Taliban commanders, insurgents captured by Afghan, US forces
KABUL (BNO NEWS) — An Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents in Helmand province Thursday, including a Taliban military commander with direct ties to Taliban senior leadership based in Pakistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force announced on Friday.
The security force targeted a compound southeast of Juy-e Shahi in Lashkar Gah district in pursuit of the commander, and after questioning the residents, the security force detained the commander and several of his associates. The assault force did not fire their weapons during the operation.
Also on Thursday, security force detained several insurgents in Khost province, while in pursuit of a Haqqani Network sub-commander responsible for coordinating improvised explosive device attacks.
NATO also said that a combined force detained several insurgents in Qalat district, Zabul province, while in pursuit of a Taliban sub-commander who facilitates and coordinates improvised explosive device attacks.
Another commander who conducted ambushes, improvised explosive device attacks, and was linked to an indirect fire attack against Forward Operating Base Ghazni in June was captured in Ghazni province.
NATO added that another Taliban commander responsible for raising and distributing funds collected from opium production and extorting money from local Afghan citizens was arrested in Helmand province.
At least seven shackled prisoners were found during the operation. They where taken to a nearby base where they are currently undergoing medical screening and debriefing.
