UPS Boeing 747 cargo plane crashes in Dubai

DUBAI (BNO NEWS) -- UPS on Friday confirmed that one of its cargo planes went down in Dubai, killing all crew on board, according to local media.

"At approximately 12 p.m. EST, UPS Flight 6 from Dubai, UAE, to Cologne, Germany, a 747-400 with two crewmembers on board crashed on takeoff. At this time, we have not confirmed any casualties," UPS said in a statement.

Sources said the Boeing 747 cargo plane went down about 20 kilometers away from the Dubai International Airport near a UAE army camp, in an unpopulated area. According to the the official WAM news agency, all crew on board the aircraft were killed in the crash.

According to aviation sources, the cargo plane reported fire in the cockpit as it was trying to land at the Dubai International Airport and then veered off course.

"We will not speculate about the cause. Until then, we ask for your patience in this difficult time," UPS added.

In October 2009, a Sudanese Boeing 707 cargo plane crashed after taking off from Dubai, killing six crew members.
