CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE (BNO NEWS) – A Southington, Connecticut man was sentenced on Wednesday to two years of probation for causing a domestic financial institution to file a Currency Transaction Report (CTR) containing a material misstatement of fact, prosecutors said.

Leo Delmaro, 53, aka “Leo Romano”, was also ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 and to forfeit $150,000 to the government; this amount was seized during the course of the investigation.

Delmaro, using the name Leo Romano and a social security number that didn’t belong to him, caused a check cashing business to file approximately 130 CTRs containing those material misstatements of fact from June 2003 to October 2008. Federal law requires all financial institutions to file a CTR for currency transactions exceeding $10,000.

For example, on March 19, 2007, Delmaro used the false information to cash checks totaling $75,113 at the check cashing business. Such business used the false statement when filing the required CTR with the Internal Revenue Service.

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE (BNO NEWS) – A Henniker, New Hampshire man was sentenced to 21 months in prison for four counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud, prosecutors announced on Wednesday.

Tom Ryder, 27, participated in a scheme to defraud lenders by acquiring real estate through straw purchasers using false and fictitious information. Ryder was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and to pay $296,353.91 in restitution.

Ryder admitted that he and others submitted loan applications filled with false information, such as the actual purchase price of the property, the income, assets and employment history of the buyers, and the intent of the purported purchasers to reside at the properties.

Ryder and the others skimmed the difference between the real sales price of the property and the sales price submitted to the lender and upon which the lender provided funds. The co-defendants then divided the proceeds.
