LITTLEROCK, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — An 81-year-old sex offender in California has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to kidnap a 12-year-old girl, police said on Sunday.

The attempted kidnapping happened at around 10.50 a.m. local time on Saturday when the young girl was walking alone in a business district in Littlerock, a census-designated place in Los Angeles County. The victim’s parents were watching from a distance.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Leroy Baca, the suspect pulled beside the 12-year-old girl and asked if she wanted a ride. When she declined, the suspect continued to drive slowly beside her.

When the mother of the child approached the vehicle and asked the suspect what he wanted, the man sped away at a high rate of speed. But the mother was able to get a good description of the suspect and his vehicle, including the license plate, when he was forced to stop for a red light a short distance away.

Soon after, Palmdale Sheriff’s Station Deputy J. Bisantz located the suspect’s vehicle in Pearblossom, a nearby unincorporated town, and made a traffic stop. The suspect was then detained and both the mother and her daughter identified him as the person who attempted to kidnap the girl.

Items consistent with the intent to kidnap were discovered in the vehicle of the suspect, who was identified as 81-year-old Keith Holmes of Pearblossom. He is a registered sex offender and was previously convicted of annoying or molesting a child under 18 years of age and assault with intent to commit rape.

Based on the circumstances, Holmes – who is still on probation – has been arrested for felony attempted kidnapping of a child under 14 years old. His bail has been set at $1 million.

SEATTLE (BNO NEWS) — Two terror suspects from California and Washington state were arrested on Wednesday evening in relation with an alleged plot to attack a military processing center in Seattle, prosecutors said on Thursday.

33-year-old Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, who is also known as Joseph Anthony Davis, of Seattle, and 32-year-old Walli Mujahidh, who is also known as Frederick Domingue, Jr., of Los Angeles, are accused of buying machines guns which they intended to use in an attack on a military entrance processing station in East Marginal Way, Seattle.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, law enforcement had been monitoring Abdul-Latif and Mujahidh, including the weapons transaction. Unbeknownst to the defendants, the weapons were rendered inoperable and posed no risk to the public. The defendants initially planned an attack on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, but later changed targets, according to the complaint. The defendants allegedly intended to carry out their attack with both grenades and machine guns.

“The complaint alleges these men intended to carry out a deadly attack against our military where they should be most safe, here at home,” said U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan. “This is a sobering reminder of our need to be vigilant and that our first line of defense is the people who live in our community. We were able to disrupt the plot because someone stepped forward and reported it to authorities.”

Law enforcement first became aware of the potential threat when a citizen alerted them that he or she had been approached about participating in the attack and supplying firearms to the conspirators. The person then agreed to work with law enforcement, which began monitoring Abdul-Latif and Mujahidh. Since early June the conspirators were captured on audio and videotape discussing a violent assault on the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPs). The MEPS is where each branch of the military screens and processes enlistees. In addition to housing many civilian and military employees, the building houses a federal daycare center.

“Driven by a violent, extreme ideology, these two young Americans are charged with plotting to murder men and women who were enlisting in the Armed Forces to serve and protect our country. This is one of a number of recent plots targeting our military here at home,” said Todd Hinnen, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security. “The threat was averted by the combined efforts of the federal, state and local law enforcement officers that make up the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.”

Abdul-Latif and Mujahidh are charged by complaint with conspiracy to murder officers and employees of the United States, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction (grenades), and possession of firearms in furtherance of crimes of violence. Abdul-Latif is also charged with two counts of illegal possession of firearms.

“This attack was foiled because of the trust and relationships the men and women of the Seattle Police Department enjoy with our community,” said Seattle Police Chief John Diaz. “The complainant felt safe approaching a Seattle Police Detective and, in doing so, ended the plot intended to take innocent lives. This cooperative investigation involving local, state, and federal partners worked exactly as intended.”

Both defendants are expected to make their initial appearance on the complaint on Thursday afternoon. If found guilty, both Abdul-Latif and Mujahidh face potential sentences of life in prison.

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — A Sacramento woman was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly killing her six-week-old daughter in a microwave oven in March, police said on Wednesday.

The Sacramento Bee reported that 29-year-old Ka Yang was arrested at her home and charged with homicide after a three-month investigation. The infant, Mirabelle Thao-Lo, was found dead on the afternoon of March 17 showing unusual fourth-degree burns.

“The child was apparently killed by the burning of the tissue,” coroner’s spokesman Ed Smith told the newspaper. “I don’t know if they can say how long baby was in the microwave.”

Sacramento police spokeswoman Laura Peck said detectives consulted with medical experts and studied three previous cases involving a child being burned in a microwave before making the arrest.

“It was a lengthy investigation to determine how these burns occurred,” Peck said, as cited by the newspaper. “When the officers arrived on scene they immediately saw there were unexplained injuries because of the burns. That led to this very lengthy, involved investigation to determine how these unusual and rare injuries occurred.”

The mother remained under suspicion while detectives studied previous cases in Texas, Virginia and Ohio. The Texas case involved a Galveston child who survived being placed inside a microwave, while the death of a 1-month-old Virginia baby in 1999 resulted in a five-year sentence for the mother. A third case in Dayton, Ohio, involved the 2005 death of a 4-week-old baby and resulted in a guilty verdict and life sentence last month for the baby’s mother.

According to police, Yang has three other children, all under age 7, who were removed from the home the day the baby was found dead.

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — Eleven people were injured on early Thursday morning after a suspected drunk driver plowed her car into a large group of bicyclists in the Baldwin Village area of Los Angeles, officials said.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Christine Dahab, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to officials. She told police she was looking down at her phone when she crashed into the bike riders just before 2 a.m. local time.

The cyclists were part of a group called Midnight Ridazz and were waiting for their friends at the time of the accident. According to authorities, nine of the 11 people injured were hospitalized, while one person is in a critical condition. Several others sustained serious injuries.

Police say the cyclists bear some responsibility because they were hanging out in the first lane of vehicle traffic and were at the park after hours. Police also found evidence of alcohol, condoms and marijuana where the group was hanging out.

The accident remains under investigation.
