President Obama announces delegation to attend the Seoul Liberation Ceremonies
WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced the designation of a Presidential Delegation to South Korea to attend the Seoul Liberation Commemoration Ceremonies.
This summer, South Korea is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean War and the strong U.S.-South Korea alliance that continues to maintain stability to the Korean peninsula. The celebrations began on June 25; the day North Korean forces invaded South Korea in 1950.
President Obama designated the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki as the person that will lead the delegation in the ceremonies that will be held in the capital Seoul on September 27-28. Such celebrations will mark the anniversary of the city’s liberation.
Shinseki will be joined by Kathleen Stephens, the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea; John McHugh, Secretary of the Army; and Andrew Shapiro, the Assistant Secretary for Political-military Affairs, Department of State.
The celebrations will recognize the Korean War veterans who sacrificed to protect South Korea from aggression of its northern neighbors. The events will highlight key events of the Korean War. Additional commemorations are slated in the United States, to be funded by the South Korean government.
The ceremonies will also pay tribute to the role the United Nations, particularly the United States, have continued to play in maintaining stability on the Korean peninsula since the armistice agreement was signed July 27, 1953.
