WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — At least one person was killed and eight others were injured after a mass shooting in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department said officers responded to the 4000 block of South Capitol Street SE after a 911 call came in at 7.27 p.m. local time. The DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services said ‘numerous’ EMS units were on scene and said a Medevac helicopter was requested.

“Around 7.30 p.m. this evening, units were dispatched to a report of a shooting in the 4000 block of South Capitol Street SE,” a DC Fire & EMS spokesman said. He said first responders arrived to a ‘very chaotic situation’ with numerous victims.

The department confirmed one person had died, while five others suffered from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Three others sustained moderate injuries. All victims, except one teen, were in their 20s and 30s.

“It’s a pretty large scene,” a police spokesman said, who had no information about possible suspects or about the circumstances of the shooting. “Details are still coming in,” he said.

NBC Washington reported that an AK47-type weapon was reportedly thrown from a green Sedan that police chased through parts of D.C. and across the Prince George’s County line.

A tenth victim was also found nearby the shooting scene, and was transported by helicopter to a local trauma center. “It may or may not be related,” a DC Fire & EMS spokesman said.
