JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck the Molucca Sea in Indonesia on Monday evening, seismologists said.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake at 7.05 p.m. local time was centered about 185 kilometers (115 miles) south of Manado on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, according to the country’s national seismological agency. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake.

No tsunami watches or warnings were issued following the earthquake, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Indonesia is often struck by powerful earthquakes as it is located in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”. However, most earthquakes do not cause serious damage.

Last month, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck about 220 kilometers (137 miles) north of Ambon on the country’s Moluccan Islands. No damage or casualties were reported from that earthquake.
