Obama orders flags half-staff for Dorothy Height’s funeral
WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — President Barack Obama on Monday ordered the flags of the United States to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, the day of Dorothy Height’s funeral.
Height was the longtime president of the National Council of Negro Women and the leading female voice of the 1960s civil rights movement. She died last Tuesday at the age of 98.
“As a mark of respect for the memory of Dorothy Height, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that, on the day of her interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day,” Obama wrote in a proclamation released by the White House.
Obama further ordered the flag to be flown at half-staff for the same period at all U.S. embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
Height will lie in repose at the National Council of Negro Women Dorothy I. Height building for a public viewing from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will conduct a public Omega Omega Service at Howard University at 2 p.m. EDT, where Height served as national president of the sorority in 1947.
At 7 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, a “Community Celebration of Life” memorial will be held at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. This memorial is open to the public.
On Thursday, a funeral service will be conducted at the Washington National Cathedral at 10 a.m. EDT. The funeral service is open to the public. Following the funeral service, the burial service will take place at the Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Maryland.
