Crystal Lewis’s son – Jacobi Hill – dies during routine dental visit

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA (WIREUPDATE) — The mother of a six-year-old boy from Virginia is trying to get answers after her son died during a routine dental visit earlier this week.

Six-year-old Jacobi Hill went into cardiac arrest while her mother, Crystal Lewis, was waiting on him during a routine visit to the VCU Pediatric Dental Clinic. Lewis told WTVR-TV that she and her family had never experienced any problems at the clinic, until last Monday.

Lewis said her oldest son, Keyon Hill, had the same procedure earlier and did not have any problem. That’s why she was confident the results would be the same with Jacobi.

“Virginia Commonwealth University wants to understand what happened in connection with the tragic event involving a pediatric patient,” the University said in a statement regarding Jacobi’s death. “Our internal investigation continues, and we are awaiting the results of the autopsy conducted by the Virginia Office of the Medical Examiner. We have been in contact with the patient’s family, and we will continue to be available to them. VCU complies with requirements governing the administration of general anesthesia during dental procedures, and professional emergency care is immediately available in our dental clinics and facilities.”

The family is waiting on autopsy results to get more answers, and the VCU Medical Center said it is conducting an internal investigation.

I’m so sorry to hear about your precious son Jacobi. I have prayed for you and your family. May the Lord Jesus Christ comfort you at this time of mourning. I never blog online, but I felt I had to share this story with you.
There is one very rare reaction to anesthesia that most people are not aware of. My mother, sister, brother, daughter (also asthmatic), and a cousin are allergic to sulfa drugs. The reactions ranged from body rashes, light headed, swollen face and lips. We thought we were okay if we just didn’t use anything with sulfa. No wine or food like dried fruit or lunch meats. We were wrong. The drug CETACANINE is very similar to sulfa chemically. Dentist often use it. In my case my mother was very ill and needed a respirator to help her breathe. The hospital numbed her throat with Cetacanine. To make a very long story short, the reaction she had was called METHEMOGLOBINEMIA. It basically means no oxygen can get into the red blood cells. Methemoglobinemia may also be passed down through families (inherited- and very rare). Along with being exposed to certain drugs, chemicals, or foods.
    Other things can be:
1 Anesthetics such as benzocaine, xylocaine, lidocaine, and benzocaine
    2 Chemical- Benzene
3 Certain antibiotics (Including dapsone and chloroquine
4 Nitrites ( additives to prevent meat from spoiling)
I hope this helps you find an answer to why this happen. You can research this all online but someone with medical knowledge would be helpful.
