Strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake rattles eastern Indonesia; no damage reported
JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake rattled Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island on early Sunday, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake at 7.33 a.m. local time was centered about 118 kilometers (73 miles) south-southwest of Manado, close to the Minahassa Peninsula of Sulawesi Island. It struck about 130 kilometers (80.8 miles) deep, according to the country’s seismological agency.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the strength of the earthquake at 5.8 on the Richter scale.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, and no tsunami warnings were issued.
Indonesia is often rocked by strong earthquakes as it is located in the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire.’
