Six-year-old Jacobi Hill, Crystal Lewis’s son, dies during routine dental visit

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA (WIREUPDATE.COM) — It’s a shocking and ultimately sad and unfortunate story. A Virginia mother is looking for answers after her six-year-old son died during a routine dental visit earlier last week. How could this happen?

Six-year-old Jacobi Hill went into cardiac arrest while her mother, Crystal Lewis, was waiting on him during a routine visit to the VCU Pediatric Dental Clinic. Lewis told WTVR-TV, a local media outlet there, that she and her family had never experienced any problems at the clinic, until last Monday. Nearly a week later, she is still trying to find answers.

Lewis said her oldest son, Keyon Hill, had the same procedure earlier and did not have any problem. That’s why she was confident the results would be the same with Jacobi.

“Virginia Commonwealth University wants to understand what happened in connection with the tragic event involving a pediatric patient,” the University said in a statement regarding Jacobi’s death. “Our internal investigation continues, and we are awaiting the results of the autopsy conducted by the Virginia Office of the Medical Examiner. We have been in contact with the patient’s family, and we will continue to be available to them. VCU complies with requirements governing the administration of general anesthesia during dental procedures, and professional emergency care is immediately available in our dental clinics and facilities.”

The family is waiting on autopsy results to get more answers, and the VCU Medical Center said it is conducting an internal investigation.

We’ll keep you updated if there are any developments on this story.
