Low pressure system near Bermuda may develop into a tropical storm this week
MIAMI (BNO NEWS) — A non-tropical low pressure system located south of Bermuda could potentially develop into the first tropical storm of the season within days, forecasters said on early Monday.
The low pressure system is currently located about 500 miles south-southwest of Bermuda and is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, along with gale-force winds.
The system is expected to move slowly toward the north-northwest during the next days, which means the storm could potentially threaten Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina if it continues to develop.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the system has ‘some potential’ to gradually acquire subtropical or tropical characteristics during the next couple of days, and could become a subtropical or tropical cyclone within 48 hours. The center said the chance of the system becoming a named storm is about 30 percent.
If the storm does become a tropical storm, it would be named Alex.
