ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS (BNO NEWS) — A British Petroleum (BP) contractor was killed on Wednesday when he was struck by a pole at a Dutch refinery, a BP spokesman said.

The victim was identified as a 22-year-old man from Klundert, a town in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The incident happened at BP’s refinery in the Europort, an area of the Port of Rotterdam.

A BP spokesman said the victim, whose name was not immediately released, was contracted by BP from Dutch company Mourik. “He was likely struck by a part of a concrete construction pole that was being put into the ground,” the spokesman said.

Mourik confirmed that one of its employees had been killed at the refinery. “Emergency services were immediately called and have applied first aid including resuscitation,” the company said in a statement. “A medical helicopter was also called. The severity of the injuries were such that the victim died on scene.”

BP said it is conducting an investigation into the incident. Both companies offered their condolences to the colleagues and family of the victim.
