WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski welcomed and applauded President Obama’s endorsement of the wireless broadband initiative on Monday.

“Broadband is about investment, innovation, jobs and opportunity, and spectrum is vital infrastructure for broadband. The Administration’s strong action today is a critical step toward ensuring that America will lead the world in mobile broadband,” Genachowski said.

On Monday, President Obama sent a memo endorsing the initiative and directing specific agencies on the next steps to follow, emphasizing that the expansion of the spectrum for a total of 500 MHz.

Obama remarked the importance of the broadband in the future of the U.S. because it will trigger the creation of innovative new businesses, provide cost-effective connections in rural areas, increase productivity, improve public safety, and allow the development of mobile technologies.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) was ordered by Obama to collaborate with the FCC in order to make available 500 MHz of federal and non-federal spectrum over the next 10 years for mobile and fixed broadband use.

Genachowski said that the FCC has already presented the National Broadband Plan for unleashing the 500 MHz of spectrum for wireless broadband. According to the FCC, the plan will promote the use of the spectrum and will generate revenue to fund a world-class mobile broadband network for the U.S. emergency responders.

“Putting this plan into action requires exactly the kind of cross-government collaboration outlined by the Administration today. By taking these important steps, we can tackle the looming spectrum crunch, lead the world in mobile broadband, and drive our global competitiveness and innovative capacity,” Genachowski added.
