Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin getting married by President Clinton
(WIREUPDATE) — Congressman Anthony Weiner of New York will marry his fiancĂ© Huma Abedin on Saturday in a ceremony at the Oheka Castle in Huntington on Long Island. Anthony Weiner, who has represented New York’s 9th district since 1999 will marry Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
The ceremony will be officiated by President Bill Clinton. The question is whether or not former Presidents of the United States have the ‘power invested in them’ to marry two people. Some argue since Presidents and former Presidents represent the federal government they don’t have jurisdiction over state functions, such as marriage.
In New York under the Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law, "an officiant must be an authorized, officially ordained member of the clergy or a public official in the State of New York such as a mayor, city clerk, deputy city clerk, appointed marriage officer, justice, or judge." The only other person allowed to perform marriage ceremonies are ship captains.
