Lebanon and U.S. discuss military cooperation
BEIRUT (BNO NEWS) – Lebanon President Michel Sleiman met on Monday with U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Alexander Vershbow, and the US Ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Sison to discuss a military cooperation between both nations, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.
Vershbow told the Lebanon President about the U.S. commitment to fully support Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty, as well as to continue sustaining the Lebanese Army and the security agencies in order to enable them to maintain the security in the country.
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri also met with Vershbow, who confirmed that the U.S. Congress approved $100 million in Foreign Military Financing for 2010. This funding will help the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) to continue its comprehensive training and program.
Vershbow informed Sleiman about his visit to the South where he was briefed by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) over the field situation. He remarked the need of an ongoing cooperation between UNIFIL and the LAF to better implement the security resolutions needed.
The U.S. embassy in Beirut announced earlier that Washington will supply Lebanon with 12 Raven unmanned aircraft.
