OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — A small plane crashed near a local airport in California on late Tuesday morning, federal officials said, killing the pilot.

Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), said the Beechcraft Baron crashed and burned in a field near Oceanside Municipal Airport, in Oceanside near San Diego. “The crash site is near Highway 76 and El Camino Real,” he said.

A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said the pilot of the aircraft was killed in the crash, and said no one else was believed to have been on board.

Gregor said FAA safety investigators are en-route to the crash site to investigate the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will also investigate, and lead the investigation.
