Ecuador, Honduras in migrant massacre row

By

QUITO, ECUADOR (BNO NEWS) – Ecuador on Thursday rejected Honduras’ criticism against Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa after he revealed that an Honduran man survived the migrant massacre in Tamaulipas, Mexico.

The Ecuadorian government released a statement on Thursday where they labeled the Honduran remarks as inacceptable and said that the criticism is a reaction towards the posture of Ecuador of not recognizing the legitimacy of President Porfirio Lobo’s government.

Honduran chancellor Mario Canahuati said on Wednesday afternoon that President Correa was irresponsible by revealing the existence of a second survivor of the massacre of 72 migrants.

“We regret the irresponsibility in which this news came out, particularly because a high official should have noticed when to talk, when to be prudent and when his words put at risk the life of innocent people,” Canahauti said.

The Honduran government said that they were aware of the survivor since the beginning but chose not to disclose the information in order to safeguard the well-being of the Honduran migrant.

After President Correa revealed that a second individual survived the massacre, the Mexican government had no choice but to confirm the information after heavy pressure by the media.

Ecuador broke diplomatic relations with Honduras since the violent overthrow of the then President Manuel Zelaya on June 28, 2009.

Honduras, through its Human Rights Commission, is currently working in ensuring the safety of the Honduran survivor. The Honduran government said that the survivor will be treated as a federal witness.
