Talks to form center-right Dutch cabinet fail
THE HAGUE (BNO NEWS) — Attempts to form a center-right minority government in the Netherlands have failed, the government announced on Friday, after weeks of negotiations.
The talks began on August 9 between the Liberals and Christian Democrats (CDA), the anti-immigration Freedom Party (PVV) and the liberal People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). But especially the CDA party was extremely divided about the talks, as some leaders and former leaders inside the party would not want to support a cabinet with PVV party leader Geert Wilders.
The Bureau Communications Cabinet Formation of the Dutch government announced on Friday that VVD politician Ivo Opstelten, who led the formation talks, had concluded his assignment.
The bureau said the talks had no results, and said the party leaders of the CDA, VVD and PVV would provide more details during a 6 p.m. news conference.
