LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — Former University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) coach John Wooden is reportedly in a grave condition at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, the Los Angeles Times and KCAL-TV reported on late Thursday.
Details on Wooden’s illness were not immediately available, but KCAL-TV reported that the legendary Bruins basketball coach and Hall of Famer, who is 99, has not eaten in the last couple of days.
Marc Dellins, the Sports Information Director at UCLA, told BNO News that he could not confirm that Wooden was hospitalized. “In accordance with the wishes of the family, UCLA is not commenting on the health of Coach John Wooden,” Dellins said.
Wooden – who was nicknamed “The Wizard of Westwood” – has coached at UCLA from 1948 up until 1975, where he won an unprecedented 10 NCAA championships in his final 12 seasons.
Known for his three rules for his players – don’t use profanity, be on time and never criticize a teammate – Wooden was the first person to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and coach.
“A Game Plan for Life: The Power of Mentoring with John Wooden,” a book co-written by Wooden and Don Yaeger, was released on the former coach’s 99th birthday. Wooden’s 100th birthday is on October 14.

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – Amnesty International called for restrictions on the use of electro-shock weapons (Taser) following the death of Anastasio Hernandez, a Mexican migrant last Friday, Amnesty International USA announced on Thursday.
Hernandez was detained on Friday by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol police after illegally re-entering the United States over the Mexican border. Hernandez was hit with a baton and later struck with a Taser gun after being combative while officers tried to deport him to Mexico at the San Ysidro border crossing in California. He stopped breathing and was pronounced brain dead in a hospital and removed from life support last Monday.
The San Diego medical examiner ruled Hernandez death as a consequence of a heart attack, with methamphetamine abuse and high blood pressure as contributing factors. However the amount of meth on the victim’s body was not disclosed. Amnesty international demanded that the autopsy findings and the full facts of the investigation must be release to the public immediately.
The organization is also urging the Customs and Border Protection agency to suspend or limit the use of Taser guns and to use them as a last resort when officers are faced with an immediate life threat of serious injury which requires harder means.
Since 2001, more than 400 people have died in the United States after being shocked with police Tasers. From this amount, Taser guns have been confirmed in more than 50 deaths as the cause or contributing factor of the fatality.

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — Northrop Grumman Corporation paid $700,000 to settle the government’s civil claims for fraudulent and improper billing under two defense procurement contracts, authorities said on Thursday.
The U.S. contends that Northrop submitted false claims to the government and improperly charged for lodging expenses for Northrop employees who actually stayed in accommodations provided by the government.
“This payment is a clear indication of our commitment to fully investigate any and all credible allegations of fraudulent and improper billing associated with contracts involving the United States Army,” said Brigadier General Colleen McGuire, the Provost Marshal General of the Army and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
The settlement resolves these allegations along with improper billing under the subject contracts.

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) – NASA’s Spirit Mars Rover examined rocks which showed evidence of a wet, non-acidic ancient environment that may have been favorable for life, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on Thursday.
Scientists analyzed these clues for four years before confirming the data. An outcrop examined in 2005 revealed high concentrations of carbonate, which originates in wet, near neutral conditions, but dissolves in acid.
The evidence that was found in the past showed signs of formerly wet Martian environments but the analysis demonstrated that those conditions were, and in some cases may have been, acidic.
“This is one of the most significant findings by the rovers. A substantial carbonate deposit in a Mars outcrop tells us that conditions that could have been quite favorable for life were present at one time in that place,” an investigator for the Mars rovers said.
In Mars, many channels seemed like they were carved by flows of water in the past. If that information could be corroborated it will indicate that the planet was formerly warmer, thanks to a greenhouse warming from a thicker atmosphere than the current one.
The rovers landed on Mars in January 2004 for missions originally planned to last three months. Spirit has been out of communication since March 22 and is in a low-power hibernation status during Martian winter. Opportunity is making steady progress toward a large crater, Endeavour, which is about seven miles away.
