WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – On Wednesday, United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated in a video message the people of Lithuania on the 20th Anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, the White House announced.

On March 11, 1990, the Supreme Council of Lithuania proclaimed the restitution of Lithuanian independence, becoming the first Soviet Union faction to declare national rights. The Supreme Council of Lithuania also adopted a temporary constitution, the Provisional Fundamental Law.

Even though the nation was still occupied by Soviet army forces, Lithuanian citizens protested against them in a non-violent manner. Thousands of people defended the Lithuanian independence despite the Soviet attacks and public demonstrations. Finally, Russia recognized Lithuania as an independent nation in September 1991, more than a year later.

“Despite that uncertain year, filled with violence and the pains of change, the people of Lithuania never lost their resolve to uphold that independence and regain their freedom. And in so doing, you have become a beacon of hope to those seeking freedom all over the world,” Secretary Clinton said.

“Today, we look back on this event as a watershed moment in the collapse of the Soviet Union, and a landmark along the path to bringing freedom and democracy to the Baltics and Central and Eastern Europe.”

“The United States remains your steadfast partner and your loyal friend, and we will face the challenges of the 21st century together,” the U.S. Secretary of State added.
