BOULDER COUNTY, COLORADO (BNO NEWS) — At least two people were killed in a mid-air collision near Boulder Municipal Airport in Boulder County, Colorado on Saturday, federal officials said.
A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed at least two people had been killed, but had no information on what happened. “Two people are confirmed dead,” Mike Fergus said.
A spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol said the agency was assisting local emergency services, but referred inquiries to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department, which did not immediately release more information.
Local media in Denver reported that two aircraft collided in mid-air, one of them a glider. A parachutist could be seen descending after the collision. The Denver Post said authorities were rushing to at least three different scenes where wreckage was found.
There was no immediate word on what type of aircraft were involved, but both aircraft are thought to be small.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) — Jets from the North American Aerospace Defense Command’s Continental United States Region (CONR) will be patrolling during Super Bowl XLIV, protecting the skies around Sun Life Stadium in Miami on game day, the Command said on Friday.
Air Force fighter jets will be airborne Sunday while enforcing the Federal Aviation Administration’s temporary flight restriction zone during Sunday’s big game.
“Special events like this world-renowned sporting event take precise coordination with all mission partners, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, FAA and local law enforcement,” Maj. Gen. Garry Dean, CONR commander said. “As America’s Air Defenders, we have a total team mindset.”
In preparation for the Super Bowl, the FAA will be imposing a Temporary Flight Restriction over the greater Miami area. An interagency partnership will help to ensure the safety of the skies over the stadium, NORAD said.
“America’s AOC will be closely monitoring all air activity while the FAA Temporary Flight Restriction is in place,” said Col. Randy Spears, 601st AOC commander. “The men and women of this AOC monitor the skies 24/7, 365 for the contiguous United States, and Sunday’s special event is another part of our mission set.”
CONR has conducted air patrols throughout the United States since the beginning of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

ELYRIA, OHIO (BNO NEWS) — Three people were confirmed dead on Monday after a small plane carrying four people crashed near Lorain County Regional Airport in Ohio, officials said.
The fixed wing multi-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B Marquise, which was manufactured in 2002, was owned by Mitts Corp. based in Gainesville, Florida, according to federal records.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded and secured the scene of the crash. Four people were on board the plane. FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro confirmed three of the people had been killed, while the condition of the fourth person was not yet known.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
Loraine County Regional Airport is a small regional airport in Elyria, Ohio, with one 100ft wide runway.
The Mitsubishi MU-2 is one of Japan’s most successful aircraft. It is a high wing, twin-engine turboprop, and has a pressurized cabin. In early 2008, however, the FAA issued a Special Federal Air Regulation (SFAR) directed at MU-2B operations. Pilots flying this aircraft would have to receive a type-specific initial training as well as recurrent training, due to safety concerns.
