LONDON (BNO NEWS) — Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Tuesday said he will offer his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II and resign as Labour Party leader, effective immediately.
The announcement follows a day of increased rumors that Brown would submit his resignation. Earlier, the Liberal Democrats told Sky News that they were ‘very close’ to reaching a deal to form a new British government.
It now appears to be certain that Conservatives leader David Cameron will become the new prime minister of Britain. The Conservatives won last week’s elections but failed to secure a majority.
Brown’s resignation on Tuesday marks the end of the Labour Party’s 13-year hold on power.

LONDON (BNO NEWS) — British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Monday said he will resign as Labour Party leader within months after the party lost last week’s parliamentary elections.
“The reason that we have a hung parliament is that no single party and no single leader was able to win the full support of the country,” Brown told a news conference. “As a leader of my party, I must accept that that is a judgement on me. I therefore intend to ask the Labour party to set in train the processes needed for its own leadership election.”
He said he would back no individual person for that election, and said the Liberal Democrats are currently in talks with the Labour party about forming a coalition. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats are also in talks with the Conservatives – who won the election but failed to gain a majority.
Moments after Brown said he would step down, the first candidate already appeared on the radar. Sky News, citing sources, reported that Foreign Minister David Miliband will run for Labour leader.
