BEIJING (BNO NEWS) — At least 10 people were killed and dozens more were injured on Sunday when a train was struck by a landslide and subsequently derailed in east China’s Jiangxi province, according to state-run media. Nearly 350 people were on board the train.

The train, heading from Shanghai to the resort city of Guilin in the southwest region of Guangxi, was caught in a landslide as it passed through Jiangxi’s storm-hit mountain districts. It happened around 2.10 a.m. local time.

The state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the locomotive and eight of the 17 carriages of the train had derailed. Some of them had overturned, including at least one which was twisted and crashed below another.

“Each of the train carriages has 118 seats. It is not yet immediately known how many passengers were on board,” said a police officer surnamed Luo, who was from the Railway Bureau in Nanchang, Jiangxi provincial capital.

According to Xinhua, rescue workers recovered at least ten bodies from the scene and successfully rescued 53 others. Some 280 people had been safely evacuated from the train.

Rescue operations are continuing, and officials fear the death toll may rise.
