SANTIAGO (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake shook Chile’s capital on Friday afternoon, more than two months after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the country’s Maule Region, seismologists said.

The moderate 5.7-magnitude earthquake at 02:52 p.m. was felt widely throughout the capital, Santiago, witnesses told BNO News.

The earthquake was centered about 113 kilometers (70 miles) north of Talca. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Moderate shaking was observed in the country’s Valparaíso, O’Higgins, Maule and Biobio regions, according to the National Emergency Office.

It said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

SAN JOSE (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on Thursday afternoon, shaking buildings in the capital of San Jose.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake at 4.16 p.m. local time (2216 GMT) was centered about 42 miles (67 kilometers) south-southwest of San Jose, or 91 miles (147 kilometers) west-southwest of Limon. It struck about 24.1 miles (38.8 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but residents in San Jose reported feeling light shaking.

The earthquake was not powerful enough to pose a tsunami threat.

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake was centered about 11 miles (18 kilometers) east-southeast of Ocotillo, a census-designated place in Imperial County. It struck about 6.3 miles (10.1 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the California Integrated Seismic Network.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake at 6.59 p.m. local time was centered about 205 km (127 miles) south-southeast of Jakarta. It struck about 13 kilometers deep, according to the country’s seismological agency.

The earthquake was felt in the capital of Jakarta, where buildings swayed.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the strength of the earthquake at 5.4 on the Richter scale. No tsunami warnings were issued.
