OCOTILLO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — A light earthquake rattled southern California on early Thursday, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 4.2-magnitude earthquake was centered about 7 miles (12 kilometers) east-southeast of Ocotillo, a census-designated place in Imperial County. It struck about 2.4 miles (3.9 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Southern California Seismic Network.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake, which was felt as far away as San Diego.

TACNA, PERU (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck southern Peru and northern Chile on Wednesday, injuring at least 10 people and causing blackouts and moderate damage, witnesses and radio reports say.

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake at 9.42 p.m. local time was centered about 25 kilometers (16 miles) west of Tacna, Peru, and 59 kilometers (36 miles) north-northwest of Arica, Chile. It struck about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Radio Uno in Tacna, Peru quoting officials reported moderate damage at least 10 people injured admitted to two hospitals.

Chile’s National Office of Emergency said there were no immediate reports of damage in Arica. Witnesses said the quake caused power outages, but that electricity had already been restored.

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off southern Sumatra on late Wednesday, seismologists said. No tsunami warnings were issued and there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake at 11.29 p.m. local time was centered about 135 kilometers (85 miles) west-southwest of the city of Bengkulu, in Indonesia’s Bengkulu province on Sumatra. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG), the country’s seismological agency.

No tsunami warnings were issued, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 5.0-magnitude earthquake at 12.43 p.m. local time was centered about 7 miles (11 kilometers) northeast of Napa, or 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of Oakland. It struck about 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake.

RESTON, VIRGINIA (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake struck far from land in the western Indian-Antarctic Ridge on Friday morning, seismologists said. There was no tsunami threat.

The 5.7-magnitude earthquake at 8.48 a.m. local time was centered about 1080 kilometers (680 miles) south-southwest of Hobart on the Australian island of Tasmania. It struck about 10.4 kilometers (6.5 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There was no threat to land and the magnitude of the earthquake was too low to generate a tsunami.
