LAUGHLIN, NEVADA (BNO NEWS) — A car slammed into the Edgewater Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring several others, officials said.

The accident happened around 9.30 a.m. local time when an elderly man drove his car at a high rate of speed into the main entrance of the building, said Officer Barbara Morgan, a spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. “Two people have been confirmed deceased,” she said. The fatalities are casino customers.

Morgan said the driver possibly had a medical episode, and said no drugs or alcohol were involved. “Two people have been transported with unknown injuries,” she said, adding that two other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A casino spokeswoman confirmed the incident, but had no other details. “We are assessing the situation,” she said.

The Edgewater Hotel and Casino is located in Laughlin, which is a census-designated place in Clark County, about 94 miles south of Las Vegas.

Authorities have asked drivers to avoid South Casino Drive in Laughlin, saying traffic will be delayed for hours.

NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) – A Bronx, New York man on Thursday pled guilty to robbing banks in New York and Las Vegas, prosecutors said.

Ronald G. Atkinson, 36, pleaded guilty to six counts of bank robbery. On each charge, he faces a maximum penalty of twenty years in prison and a maximum potential fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.

Beginning in March 2009, Atkinson robbed six banks in New York City and Las Vegas, Nevada. Atkinson was apprehended in Las Vegas in June 2009. Atkinson robbed a Citibank, a Sovereign Bank, a Chase Bank, and a Capital One Bank in Manhattan. He robbed a Nevada State Bank and a Citibank in Las Vegas.

During the robbery of the Capital One Bank in Manhattan, Atkinson placed a written note on a bank teller’s counter which read: “Give me all the money, don’t give me no ink, don’t pull the button.” When the teller handed over some of the cash from the drawer, ATKINSON demanded more, saying, “You have 15 seconds to give me all you have or else I’m going to start shooting everyone in here.”

Prosecutors praised the outstanding investigative work of the FBI and the NYPD in this case, and thanked Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for their assistance.
