MONTERREY, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) — One of Mexico’s biggest cities on Friday woke up to news that several streets, boulevards and highways were blocked by hitmen, in an attempt to hinder Army operations after several shootings and the arrest of a drug lieutenant.

On Thursday, the Mexican presidency announced the arrest of San Pedro Garza Garcia’s Beltran Leyva cartel lieutenant Alberto Mendoza. San Pedro Garza Garcia is a municipality of Monterrey’s metro area.

In response to the arrest, at least two groups blocked two major highways later that afternoon, included one connecting with Monterrey’s International Airport, one of the country’s busiest.

On Friday morning, a shooting between the Army and gunmen was reported outside Monterrey’s Institute of Technology, one of the largest private universities in Latin America. The Army said two hitmen were killed during the gunbattle, and several soldiers were injured in grenade attacks.

Groups trying to hinder Army operations after the Institute of Technology shooting blocked more than 20 streets, highways and boulevards.

Several car chases were also reported between rivals drug gangs, including one in which a suspected gunman was chased down in a Monterrey’s suburban area and was taken in custody of the rival group after he crashed his car into an electricity pole.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Michael Mullen, will lead a top-level delegation that will visit Mexico City on Tuesday to discuss drug-related violence.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon is to meet with President Barack Obama on May 19 during a two-day state visit, the White House and the Mexican presidency announced on Thursday.

President Obama will host a state dinner for President Calderon, the White House said, the first since President Obama took office in 2009.

Mexico’s presidency said Calderon and Obama will talk about border infrastructure, trade facilitation, cooperation against transnational organized crime, environment, the challenges facing the Mexican community in America, and the wide range of topics from the fields regionally and internationally.

Calderon will also meet different actors in the U.S. political life, like with legislative leaders to “strengthen the new framework for bilateral cooperation.”

CIUDAD JUAREZ (BNO NEWS) — Mexican president Felipe Calderon will travel to Ciudad Juarez on Tuesday, just two days after the killings of three people linked to the U.S. Consultate in the city, the Mexican presidency said on Monday.

President Calderon will arrive amid high international tension prompted by the murder of a U.S. Consulate office, her husband, and a Mexican husband of another employee on Saturday.

Calderon’s visit was scheduled days ago and in response to a security strategy involving local sectors after the killing of 15 people in January, including 10 youths, who were massacred at a high school party.

On Monday afternoon the bodies of Lesley Enriquez, a U.S. Consulate employee and four months pregnant, her husband Arthur Redelfs and Jorge Alberto Sancido, husband of another consulate employee, were taken to El Paso, Texas.

The killings came three weeks after news reports described how U.S. drug agents were going to become more closely involved in Mexico’s war against the drug cartels, according to the New York Times.

FBI agents and personel from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City arrived to Ciudad Juarez on Monday to help in the investigation.
