MERIDA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) — Mexico’s ruling party, the center-right National Action Party, lost the key local election of the Merida municipality in the state of Yucatan, according to preliminary results released on early Monday.

With more than 84 percent of the votes counted, Angelica Araujo Lara, from the center-left former governing Institutional Revolutionary Party had to 49.19 percent.

Former Senator and former Mexico’s social development minister Beatriz Zavala Peniche from the National Action Party had 45.4 percent.

The leftist Labor Party came in a distant third with 1.02 percent of the vote.

The Merida municipality had voted in favor of President Felipe Calderon’s National Action Party for 18 years. 12 states will choose governors during the next midterm local elections on July 4.

An election exit poll from GCE/MilenioTV showed Angelica Araujo Lara, from the center-left former governing Institutional Revolutionary Party far ahead of her rivals for the Merida municipality.

The survey showed Araujo Lara with 51.2 percent. Former senator and former Mexico’s social development minister Beatriz Zavala Peniche from the National Action Party had 37.3 percent.

The Merida municipality had voted in favor of President Felipe Calderon’s National Action Party for 18 years.

12 states will choose governors during local elections on July 4.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon is to meet with President Barack Obama during a state visit on May 19, the White House and the Mexican presidency announced on Thursday.

President Obama will host a state dinner for Mexico’s President Calderon, the White House said, the first since President Obama took office in 2009.

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake rocked Mexico City on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

“The entire building is shaking. It’s still shaking,” said Rodrigo Aguiar, Vice President of BNO News and head of BNO News’ Mexico City bureau, which is located on the 14th floor of the Greco Building. Aguiar said the shaking, which began at 6.47 p.m. local time, lasted for about 30 seconds.

A seismologist at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7, at a depth of about 24.9 miles. Its epicenter was located in Oaxaca, Mexico.

There was no risk of a tsunami.
