LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — A powerful 6.9 to 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico and California on Sunday, seismologists said. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties.

The earthquake at 3.40 p.m. local time was centered about 45 miles southeast of El Centro, California, or 16 miles south-southwest of Guadalupe Victoria in Mexico’s Baja California.

Strong shaking has been reported throughout California, and the Los Angeles Fire Department said it has gone into an earthquake mode.

No tsunami warning has been issued. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties from the earthquake.

SANTIAGO (BNO NEWS) — No tsunami warning after strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake off central Chile, Chilean officials say.

TOKYO (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off the coast of central Japan on Sunday, seismologists said, shaking buildings as far away as Tokyo.

The earthquake at 5.08 p.m. local time was centered about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of the city of Sendai. It struck about 51 kilometers (31.7 miles) deep, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Buildings in Tokyo, about 285 kilometers (175 miles) northeast from the earthquake’s epicenter, shook slightly. “Just experienced my first earthquake in Tokyo, while on the 27th floor of our apartment,” said Nooshin Navidi, a Twitter user.

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
