WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — President Obama to make statement on Chile earthquake and U.S. tsunami warning and advisories at 2 p.m. EST.
PYONGYANG (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck the Chinese, Russian and North Korean border region on Thursday, seismologists said. No damage is expected.
The earthquake, which struck around 70 miles northeast of Chongjin in North Korea, had a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 to 6.9. While the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 6.7-magnitude, the tsunami warning centers had a preliminary 6.8. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake had a 6.9-magnitude.
Even though the earthquake had an unusual strong magnitude, which normally would be capable of causing severe destruction, no damage is expected from Thursday’s earthquake. The earthquake was located about 349 miles deep, making it an extremely deep earthquake.
A seismologist at the USGS said it did not expect any damage, and said the earthquake was the strongest in the area since 2008 when a 5.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded.
